An AI tutor in your homeschool, without outsourcing the thinking
For home educators with learners around 11 to 18, especially in subjects where you don't feel like the expert. (Disclosure: we make Ask Poppy.)
Ask Poppy, the AI tutor that asks instead of tells. Free, 30 messages a day · iPhone, iPad, Mac
Where AI genuinely helps at home
- Being a patient second explainer when the textbook (or you) isn't landing.
- Quizzing before a test, one question at a time.
- Talking through a project idea or a curiosity rabbit hole.
- Checking the reasoning in work your child has already done.
Where it quietly hurts
- Writing anything your child hands in or calls their own.
- Producing answers to worksheets "to check against" that become the answers.
- Summarising so the reading never happens.
A weekly rhythm that works
- Try first: 10 honest minutes alone before asking anyone, human or AI.
- Ask for hints, not answers. Use a tutor that does this by default, or paste our "keep me thinking" prompt into any AI.
- Explain it back to you at dinner, in two minutes, no notes.
- Tomorrow test: one question from yesterday, from memory.
- Friday review: what did AI help with this week, and was it help or a shortcut?
Make it official with the free AI house rules generator (there's a homeschool preset and a screen-light Waldorf-inspired preset).
How to tell your child is really learning
Ask them to teach it back to you without the screen, then ask one "what if" question. If they can adapt the idea, it's theirs. If they can only repeat it, the AI did the thinking.
On funding: some US education savings account programs reimburse educational software subscriptions. Rules vary by state and program and approval isn't guaranteed, so check your program's current purchasing guide first.
Looking for a tutor that hints instead of answering? Ask Poppy is an AI tutor you talk or type to. It asks questions and gives one hint at a time instead of handing you the answer, and it remembers where you left off so you can pick it up again tomorrow.

Questions
Should homeschoolers use AI tutors?
AI can be a patient study partner for subjects a parent doesn't feel expert in, especially in the middle and high school years. The key is choosing tools and rules that make the learner do the thinking: questions and hints, not finished answers.
How do I stop my teen using AI to do their work?
Agree on house rules together (our free generator helps), keep AI in shared spaces, ask your teen to explain their work back to you, and pick tools designed to hint rather than answer.
Can ESA or scholarship funds pay for an AI tutor app?
Some US education savings account programs reimburse educational software subscriptions, but rules differ by state and program, and approval isn't guaranteed. Always check your program's current purchasing guide before buying.
